Top 10 Worst Cos Play Costumes Fails

Top 10 Worst Cos Play Costumes Ever

To regular readers it may seem all we ever do these days is post hot pictures of Power Girl cos players or a sexy Starfire, nude Mass Effect girls, Super girl or maybe a well toned Wonderwoman but it’s not all sexy woman here at Gears of Halo. To know what’s good, we have to know what’s bad. So here’s the worst cos play photos fails we could find.

We were was in two minds about this post actually in that some of the people here are just honest good folk, being earnest in their endeavours and possibly are ridiculed for that. But then I thought – If you are posing for a photo then, in the internet age, your cosplay fail is simply going straight to the internet:

Princess Leia in full costume

How ME3’s Legion’s Voice was created

Game Informer managed to get their hands on Rob Blake, audio lead who designed the voice for Mass Effect 2’s Legion character. It’s a great insight into how cool noises can translate into awesome robot voice.

Check out the video for a sneak peak at what Legion will sound like in ME3

Halo’s Cortana Costume Play Photos

Do you think they’re real?

Cortana is the purple goddess of the Halo Universe. She’s the reason the Master Chief was able to save the entire Universe from the threat of the flood and that evil nasty cult known as the Covenant. She’s second in popularity to Master Chief, so in effect, she is as Bumblebee to Optimus Prime.
A popular figure on the internet, people are always searching Gears of Halo for sexy nude pictures of Cortana – but today that’s not the case – we’re bringing you pictures of cosplayers dressing up as Cortana. Heck, we’ll even through in a couple of pictures of the Master Chief:

Jean Grey is the well known character from the X-men. She has been known under the aliases Marvel Girland later, Phoenix and Dark Phoenix, and is best known as one of five original members of the X-Men, for her relationship with Cyclops, and for her central role and transformation in the classic X-Men storyline, “The Dark Phoenix Saga”.
Given the character’s longevity her beauty and hot body, Jean Grey is a popular cos play choice.

Mass Effect 3 Postponed / Delayed / Stuck in Development

Arrival: Delayed

In a short update to the Mass Effect 2 Facebook page, Casey Hudson the game’s producer has announced a delay to the game.
“Mass Effect 3 will be released in the first three months of 2012. The development team is laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series, ensuring that it exceeds everyone’s expectations.” – Casey Hudson, Executive Producer Mass Effect series”

In my best Kiwi accent, all I can say is “woll that’s shit’.
So I wonder what has caused the delay? Got any ideas? Perhaps they are putting the Mako back in? 😉

Bungie won’t be at E3

A lot of pundits will be disappointed to learn that Bungie will not be at E3 in an official capacity this year. Why? Because that means no official announcement about whatever new IP is cooking up for us… so we are probably not going to hear anything about Destiny or whatever it’s called until at least after June.

Coupled with the news that Mass Effect 3 is delayed, it’s sad news all round this week. Cheer up with some Power Girl.

Halo Concept Art by various Bungie Artists

To make a Halo game you need awesome concepts and ideas. Ideas for plot, concepts for game play and most importantly, ideas for for what the game might look like. It is the concept artist’s job is to take some of those ideas and turn them into on paper visions which will then help shape the game.

If you want a real world example at how important this is, look no further than Ralph McQuarrie whose concept work for George Lucas is often cited as one of the key factors in the look of the Star Wars universe.

So making the of Halo: Reach needed lots of ideas for how things might look. This included the Elites, Covenant ships, weapons, landscapes, buildings and what our heroes might appear like. As a result of discussion, the artwork is revised and redrawn until everyone is happy.

Halo Reach has been released to an adoring fan base – this means there’s a lot of Halo concept artwork lying around gathering dust so Microsoft has given all the artists permission to release their concept art for Halo to the internets. Here’s a selection of that work and other Halo games from various blogs of the artists themselves.

First up is a selection from Jaime Jones. Here we have Jaime’s initial sketch of the promotional art that was eventually released as part of the pre Reach launch. Rather than doing a full drawing, a rough outline was drawn up and eventually worked into the final you see below. Is that Jorge lurking in the middle ground?

The final concept art image from Jaime Jones is his vision of the Covenant fleet glassing the planet Reach.

Your world is but glass?

One of the artists who has released a lot of pictures to share with Halo fans has been Issac Hannaford. His picture of the Covenant bringing the rain while a soldier looks on, waiting for his chance, is pretty spectacular:

A lot of people will not know that Noble Team was originally going to be a team of 7, as Bungie was probably going for some kind of Seven Samuari vibe. Eventually the design was taken to go to a team 6, including the Lone Wolf so two characters were cut from the game’s plot, Thom and Rosenda. She looked a bit too moody any way, probably wasn’t a good team fit…..

Emile, Carter, Rosenda, Kat, Jun, Thom, and Jorge.

It’s cool to see how the bald Kat concept was carried though to the end game, whereas Jorge’s character was given a more older and battle hardened look. Hannaford also did some cool Elite design work:

Here’s a concept for some kind of crazy machine robot that never made it’s way into Halo 3. Could it have been some kind of Sentinel? I doubt we’ll never know….

Taking a slight detour from plant Reach to Earth and some ODST artwork by Steve Chon. Here’s some of the Hive – it looks like it has the vibe that ODST producers were going for, cold and moody. It would appear to be an example of how critical the artist’s vision is in helping shape the final game:

Dorje Bellbrook also was involved in some Halo concept artwork too. Here’s a picture of some Spartans being deployed to the planet. If you think pack to the cut scene just before the Tip of the Spear level, you can see how this kind of art influences the end result. And as for the Elites, they just look evil!

Spartan assault

Elites from the Winter Contingency Level?

Dorje has clearly been around the Bungie traps for a while too – check out his Halo 3 picture of the Master Chief falling to Earth from space. That’s High Charity entering Earth’s atmosphere to the right.

Alex Chu is another artist who is notable for working on Halo. Can you spot the hidden spartan?

You may have seen Alex Chu’s art before. It was Alex who designed the Game Informer cover which featured one of the first articles to really lift Bungie’s skirt and reveal some detail about Halo: Reach.

And here’s the wider canvas from which the above image was eventually drawn from.

While we are on a roll with the Halo artwork, we may as well keep going eh? Next up for your view pleasure is a landscape sketch by artist Ryan Demita. I think it looks like something that would be found on the Tip of the Spear level….

Of course it’s not all Elites and space stations when designing games. The smaller in game things need love too. Here’s Demita’s version of a Covenant Vehicle Repair Lift:

Which reminds me of some more artwork design for the Engineers that featured in Halo: ODST

. I think the Engineers were one of the coolest things to come out the entire Halo franchise. I loved reading the story of one in Joeseph Staten’s Contact Harvest

novel!

This design by Bungie’s own in house artist Shi Kai Wang eventually became this little fellow:

Finally let’s finish with this some concept artwork that Bungie released themselves. Unfortunately I cannot identify the actual artist’s name. If you know, drop a note in the comments.

ME3: No new love interest, just bitchiness

Miranda cosplay

According the Mass Effect series’ executive producer Casey Hudson, the third installment of the space sage will not introduce any new romantic character options. Rather, Commander Sheppard will have to manage love interests from the first two games.

“In this one, we don’t really have new characters that are part of the romance stuff in the way that we did in Mass Effect 2, where we introduced a lot of characters…But we also have some interesting things happening, where you’ve got Ashley and Kaiden from the first game, you’ve got Liara, and there’s sort of a love triangle there. And then we gave people a bunch of new characters. People said “Well, I just want my Mass Effect 1 characters, and I’m not interested in any of these characters.” But then a lot of people had romances with those characters, and now the fun is bringing back some of those characters from Mass Effect 1 and putting them back in the mix, and looking at what you did in Mass Effect 2 and bringing some… interesting scenarios around those things.”

What does this mean? There’s gonna be one helluva cat fight on the Normandy at some stage in ME3!

Update: all is not as it seems. stupid internet.

Corpse Bride Cosplay

Victor and his Bride

Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride movie was a classic Burton design effort – his drawing and design talents are unique – think Beetlejuice and The Nightmare Before Christmas

so it’s nice surprise that Corpse Bride has been the subject of some cosplay action – and indeed, it’s some fan love of a pretty high standard!

Here’s an original movie poster for comparison.

Star Wars Kinnect to appear at E3

Spike TV’s Geoff Keighley often gets the inside knowledge regarding E3 2011- and he recently tweeted this statement: “Yes, Star Wars for Kinect

will officially be unveiled live during the Xbox 360 E3 briefing on Spike. Tune in on June 6 for more.”I say good because the two Kinnect games I bought were shit.

Frankie Says 343 will not relax

Don’t Ask.

Following the E3 announcement of Halo 4 and Halo: Combat Evolved: Anniversary Edition, Frankie is back with a love letter of sorts to halo fans. It’s called the ‘inaugural 343 Halo Bulletin’ Once can only expect this kind of communications from 343 to ramp up from hear on in!

I’d just like to precede the inaugural 343 Halo Bulletin with a note to say that it’s very, very nice to be back, talking to Halo fans directly, after a couple of years of relative quiet. And today, you’re going to find out what we’ve been doing, with all that quiet.

Halo, E3! It’s finished!

In the first ten years of Halo, Bungie created a universe so compelling, gameplay so absorbing, controls so natural, that a phenomenon was birthed, raised, and honed into Spartan caliber. And to celebrate that decade of innovation, excitement and involvement from a community like no other, 343 Industries finds itself tasked with continuing that franchise and building upon its strong foundations.

The first celebration, and the one with which opened the Halo conversation at E3, is the game that started it all, albeit reimagined, retouched, remastered and remade. Halo Anniversary, as we call it for the purposes of brevity, is that game.

Do you feel lucky, grunt?

It’s been a long time coming – and frankly, the single most requested item from the Halo community. More, even, than the legendary, mythical Grunt Plushy. But we couldn’t just remake it, there’d be no point. For starters, the game Bungie made in the first place is practically perfect, and it’s available, verbatim, on disc and Games on Demand for Xbox 360. It runs smoothly and at a higher resolution.

What we had to do was modernize it in meaningful, useful, exciting, practical and valuable ways. And we had to honor it, properly. So how to do all that?

Firstly, we had to consider what it was people truly loved about Halo. And so we did. For months. The main list is obvious – gameplay, story, universe, physics, controls. Bam. But there were other, less objective things. Atmosphere, music, tension, joy, acrophobia, agoraphobia and claustrophobia. Feelings, in other words. So all of those had to be replicated, retained and somehow enhanced.

So we did not DARE touch the gameplay in Halo. As a matter of fact, the gameplay engine, the physics, the controls (with some minor changes for the 360 controller and the aspect ratio) are identical. It is, in short, the Halo CE engine, but with a second graphics layer, a separate engine in fact, running on top. You can see this phenomenon yourself by pressing the back button at any time. The game will switch from old graphics to new, and back again, in real time. That in itself, is a bizarrely fun feature – one we constantly used to check to see if things truly were identical, or more frequently, simply to compare the two generations of hardware and see how far things had come. Although perversely, sometimes we switched back only to remember how good the original looked.

On the beach with the Silent Cartographer

We’ve definitely made some changes in how the new graphics affect the game. For example, the Library is still scary, eerie, dangerous – but now, with some clever use of textures and colors and lighting, it’s a bit easier to navigate. There are visual cues to orient yourself by, as you battle the bad guys who now inhabit that space.

There are tiny little differences that do in fact make the experience fresh, even where it should be verbatim – subtleties that deep, hardcore fans will notice, like extra vegetation making headshots just a shade more challenging, or the remastered audio making some encounters a bit more shocking.

And on the subject of audio – everything has been remastered – sound effects beefed up and remixed, but more importantly, we took Marty O’Donnell’s industry-changing soundtrack and gave it some deep, smoove loving, with a re-orchestration and brand new recording with the Skywalker Orchestra. So the perfect melodies, the movements and the themes are intact, but just glowingly more rich and lavish (and expensive). Anyone who’s heard the similar project with Halo Legends

will know sort of what to expect, but expect it to be better.

All the work on the improved graphics layer for Campaign (and a ton of other elements, not to oversimplify things) was created in partnership with our friends at Saber Interactive and we’re incredibly proud of the work they’ve done and the hurdles they’ve overcome.

And multiplayer! Well that was the challenge. We ached over this one. Do we build peer-to-peer netcode for Halo 1 and simply update the graphics? Do we disrupt the Halo: Reach player base and community ecology? Or do we invest in the loyalty of those players, and the amazing new features Reach has brought to the table? It was a super hard decision, but ultimately the thing that tipped the balance in Reach’s favor was this simple fact: If we added netcode to Halo CE’s console gameplay, it would change it irrevocably. It would NOT be the same game you remembered – it would be a compromised vision of it, with the pros and cons that lag, latency and more can bring. Oh, and everyone would whore the pistol 24/7.

So Reach it is. And that helped us define which maps to choose. Obviously Blood Gulch would be a bit redundant. And obviously Beaver Creek was a no-brainer. You’ll also see a new Covenant-themed version of Damnation, a glimpse of another old fan favorite from Halo CE, and one map that while famous and awesome, has never been seen on console before. I’m sure you’ve figured it out by now.

There are seven total multiplayer maps, and we’ll reveal them over the next few months. But one of them and another factor that pushed us towards the Reach engine is a Firefight map – a Firefight map unlike any you’ve ever seen before. One thing I can tell you is that this one is particularly appropriate to Halo: Combat Evolved but will do things that no Firefight map has done.

We plan to support these maps fully and appropriately in matchmaking – making sure that the nature and nostalgia of those maps are honored in how they’re included. We haven’t finalized all those decisions yet, but think about how “classic modes” work now. All of our multiplayer work is done in partnership with the incredible folks at Certain Affinity, including of course, Max Hoberman, who is himself a walking celebration of classic Halo.

I can also admit we’ve been spying on you guys a bit. A forum question here, a thread there. Trying to gently find out what Halo players, both current and lapsed, really wanted from a renewed, revitalized Halo experience, without sending those questions into the sterile environ of a focus group. This game is a gift to the fans and a celebration of ten years of epic community. We wanted that to be enveloped in the product itself.

And it’s a great value – something else we wanted to be sure about. At $39.99 I personally feel you’re getting more than a full-priced game’s worth of content – and without the slightest risk that after spending sixty bucks, the game simply isn’t fun. But we dogpiled on the value. What else have we added? Well, lots. Some we’ll talk about, some we won’t. There will be Achievements – hilarious, easy, hard, cool. There will be Terminals – but on a scale of ambition you might not expect. These Terminals will add a really fascinating glimpse into the deeper heart of the Halo universe and make important connections between our past games, present novels and future titles

P.S. Frankie, I’m sorry I hassled you about your balloon fetish. I heard your treatment programme has worked wonders, so well done. 😉

Phil Spencer has some Halo intel

Here’s an interview IGN did with Microsoft Games Studios VP Phil Spencer

IGN: To clarify, Halo 4

is coming to Xbox 360 in 2012?

Spencer: Yes

IGN: Don Mattrick said during the conference this was a “new trilogy” for Xbox 360. So we should expect the other two titles for that platform? How is this working exactly?

Spencer: No announcement on that yet.

IGN: Can you talk about this new trilogy. Where did this story come from?

Spencer: 343, the studio that’s now building Halo, thought about the place and story they wanted to tell inside of the Halo fiction and found a story arc that they thought would really be interesting to tell. It happened to play out in three beats, starting with the return of Master Chief, which is what we showed in the teaser. Bringing Master Chief back to the franchise is a huge move. People love playing as Master Chief and he’s obviously iconic to the franchise. We’ll be talking more about the story between now and launch.

Bringing Master Chief back to the franchise is a huge move.

IGN: Was the teaser trailer you showed CG or did it include in-game assets?

Spencer: It was all CG.

IGN: Can you talk about what game engine Halo 4 will use?

Spencer: 343 obviously has partnered closely with Bungie for a while. We had been working with them on Halo: Reach and map packs. We started with the code base from Halo, so it’s not something we had to re-roll from the beginning. [Chief Technology Officer] David Wu and the team behind the core engine tech inside of 343 have done a lot of work. Halo has always been a unique game with huge outdoor environments but also playing indoor environments at the same time. The technology base isn’t 100 percent new, but a ton of work has gone into it by 343.

IGN: You have a Halo game for this year with Halo Anniversary, you put out Halo 3 in ’07, Halo Wars in ’09, Halo ODST in ’09, and Halo: Reach in 2010, and now Halo 4 coming in 2012. Should we assume this is an annual franchise now?

Spencer: People shouldn’t look at Anniversary as part of an annualized franchise. I love the fact we’re doing the Anniversary edition because I loved Halo 1. We just looked at it and thought it needed to be refreshed. It wasn’t part of us trying to get into an annualized rhythm with the franchise. It will be done in time for this holiday that is the 10th Anniversary for Halo. It felt like a good time to celebrate it.

IGN: When did the discussions start to do this HD remake of Halo?

Spencer: It was a couple years ago. We thought about what we wanted to do for the Halo anniversary. It’s important to us as a franchise and as a platform. Halo launched Xbox and it made it relevant for us core gamers. We’re not going to ignore that. But you have to plan ahead of time. We had discussions about “will people look at this as us milking it,” but we figured with achievements, Xbox Live, and “up-res-ing” the game, it was a project out of passion not a project out of business.

IGN: Will Microsoft be doing more HD remakes of original Xbox titles?

Spencer: Obviously Halo 2 is one that we’ve talked about. I wouldn’t say this is a strategy for us to go back and remake Xbox 1 games. This was the 10th Anniversary of Halo so it made sense. We don’t really have a “remasters” program that we’re kicking off with this launch. There are obviously some great Xbox 1 games that would be nice to see, but we’ve focused most of our resources on creating new things. I’m not putting it in or out of bounds right now, though.

IGN: Sales for the Halo franchise peaked with Halo 3. When you look at Call of Duty and it sells 20 million copies every year on multiple platforms, how do grow the Halo franchise and get it into that 10+ million category?

Halo 3 has sold over 10 million units and Halo: Reach continues to sell.

Spencer: Halo 3 has sold over 10 million units and Halo: Reach continues to sell. We’re not even a year into its release cycle. But it’s a good point. When you think about these cross platform games that sell on so many platforms, it’s great to see the weight that Call of Duty plays on our box with the online content, online play, and just the retail sales of the franchise. For us we want to make sure Xbox customers have a unique set of blockbusters that are theirs. Halo, Gears of War, Fable, and Forza, because there’s a pride in being an Xbox customer and they want to know they have content that’s uniquely built for them and I think Halo plays an important role there.
For me the most important thing is when we release a Halo game, it’s the quality and is the pinnacle of design and creativity on our box. That’s what that franchise stands for and I have a ton of confidence in 343’s ability to continue to do that.

Gravity Hammer Halo Tattoo

I wonder what percentage of the Halo fan base has a Halo tattoo? We seen some great Halo tattoos before and some fans like to run riot and here’s a new one to add to the pile, The Gravity Hammer!

JJ: Reviews Bioshock 2 for the Xbox

JJ: Reviews Bioshock 2 for the Xbox

So I know I’m a year and a half behind but I’ve finally got hold of Bioshock 2 and had a run through the campaign and I got say, like the original Bioshock, this is a bloody good game!

Set some 8 years after the first decent to Rapture, Bioshock 2 begins with you as a Big Daddy (known as Delta) facing your foe. As you induces you to commit suicide using hypnosis you immediately what kind of hell hole have you found yourself, is it Rapture’s own version of the Devil’s Dungeon?

Game play is based on the original BioShock, where the player Delta explores the city of Rapture and fights off Splicers, other abominations, the remaining psychotic and deluded human population of the city, using a combination of the environment, weapons, Plasmids and Tonics.

I found myself favouring the electrical plasmid, the shotgun and the spear gun as my weapons of choice. The real fun to be had its mixing it up with the differing kinds of ammunition, the burning phosphorous shells being an effective show stopper.

The story line is intertwined with the original tale of Rapture in the sense that the struggle between Andrew Ryan and this game’s Antagonist Sophia Lamb is the back drop to your attempt to rescue your daughter Eleanor. This time the game focuses on a discussion of a kind of socialism / religion that would determine a new Utopia as opposed to Ryan’s rhetoric of a free market with out principle or rule of law.

Is Sophia really your daughter? Is this a fake out like the classic Would You Kindly? from the original? Who is going to double cross me? Should I let this Old Lady die? What about this Child Kidnapper? Should he be made to suffer for his actions?

These are some of the questions that Bioshock 2 asks you to think about and even act on. There are plenty of occasions when you have no time to think but merely react – this is when the Big Sisters come for you. As you venture through the game, your Little Sister can obtain some Adam for you – the Big Sisters do not want you to get the Adam (as you become stronger) so they come to attack – the are relentless screaming banshees that do not stop until you are dead or they die trying.

The Big Sister attacks make for a delightful gaming experience, and kudos to the game designers for introducing this new facet to the game to mix things up. While it’s always fun to take on a rampaging Big Daddy, they simply aren’t scary anymore when put up against the Big Sisters. The music that accompanies a Big Sister attack is simply a perfect mix of conveyed terror and danger – indeed the music of Bioshock 2 is an absolute triumph.

What’s up Sister?

Overall Bioshock 2

is a damn fine sequel to what was a refreshingly original piece of gaming adventure. People without brains can play it for it’s run and gun appeal whereas those with some life learning or education can enjoy the fantastic story – not since the last Bioshock game have I really had to think – sure Mass Effect asks you to make choices along the way, but Bioshock has the edge in engaging my mind.

I think Bioshock Infinite

has a lot to live up to after this game. Hopefully it’s story will be as appealing as both Bioshocks have been. For this gamer, I’ll definitely be getting it so as to have another chance to play with the magic of the Bioshock series.

Bungie Anniversary Vidoc Delayed: Sad face

Gears of War 4 basically confirmed by Cliff Bleszinski

Cliffy B has this to say when pressed about life post Gears of War 3:

‘Gears 1 and 2 sold about 6 million copies, so if [Gears of War 3] comes out and, God willing, sells 8 or 10 million it would be completely dumb to not do another one, right?’

Which is good news for Gears fan boys and girls.

Cliff further noted:

‘It’s just business 101. So, I mean, the key is figuring out what’s appropriate. What makes sense for this connected world that we’re moving into?’
So those with memories longer than that of the MTV generation may remember the rumours and (trade marks) that went around for Gears of War: Exile being the game that was gonna be announced and then pulled? You can bet your bottom dollar that that is what is the likely next Gears game will be, and Cliff’s basically confirming it.
Of course, I could be wrong…..

Meagan Marie’s Anya Stroud cosplay

I spied on Cliffy B’s twitter account that he gave props to Meagan Marie’s cosplay effort to capture the glory that is Anya Stroud – over the past few months the Gears of Wars producers have made it pretty clear that Anya is going to feature in Gears of War 3 in a big fashion, so why wouldn’t Meagan want to get together a sweet costume for the Comic Con? More detail here.

More Anya Stroud cosplay at the link.

Also here’s Meagan dressed as Poison Ivy.

Show Your Inner Browncoat With This T-Shirt

browncoat tee

The ideal Browncoat shirt should include a few things: Serenity is a must, Jayne’s hat is iconic, and let’s not forget the Browncoat symbol. Artist DoOomcat included those images and more in this Firefly t-shirt design. You can also spot Wash’s dinosaurs and Hawaiian shirt, the Fruity Oaty bar octopus, and creepy hands of blue. Yes, it’s completely awesome.

Who Wouldn’t Say “Yes” To An Iron Man Arc Reactor Engagement Ring?

arc1

We’ve featured arc reactor rings in the past, but we thing this version would be Tony Stark’s choice. It has an aquamarine center stone surrounded by princess cut diamonds in a setting made of 14K white gold that’s been darkened with black rhodium. Because it’s handmade it’s also customizable so you can contact the seller for changes like yellow gold, sterling silver, or even different stones. Production time is about 3-4 weeks from start to finish, so make sure you order well in advance of when you plan to pop the question.
