Steven Spielberg & Quentin Tarantino Not Interested in Directing ‘Star Wars Episode VII’
Guys, it’s a sorry day when I’m beginning to tire of talking about Star Wars, but that’s where we are. And since the announcement Star Wars Episode VII is officially on its way there’s been a couple sticking points no one can let go of, for one, who’s directing? There’s been rumor after rumor, but at least we’ve got two names we can definitively cross off the list: Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino. And honestly, were they ever serious contenders? Sure, in some nerd fantasy world we’d love to see either of them play with a galaxy far, far away, but in the real world? No. In what reality would Disney let Tarantino even touch Star Wars?
Which exactly one of the reasons Tarantino told Entertainment Weekly he’s not interested,
I could so care less. No, sorry. Especially if Disney’s going to do it. I’m not interested in the Simon West version of Star Wars.
I’m actually a little embarrassed for the reporter who had to ask that question. Ouch.
Years ago, Spielberg would have loved to make a Star Wars movie. Even as recently as 2002 he said,
I’ve asked [Lucas]. He won’t let me do one. I wanted to do one 15 years ago, and he didn’t want me to do it. I understand why – Star Wars is George’s baby. It’s his cottage industry and it’s his fingerprints. He knows I’ve got Jurassic Park and Raiders. But George has Star Wars and I don’t think he feels inclined to share any of it with me.
Wonder if Spielberg feels a little betrayed that now, 10 years later, Lucas is doing exactly that, letting someone else work on Star Wars. If he does, he isn’t letting it show, as he told Access Hollywood,
No! No! It’s not my genre. It’s my best friend George’s genre.
I wonder if any other directors will be publicly pulling their names out the running for Star Wars Episode VII. It seems kind of silly since most other reports seem to imply they’ll be looking for a lesser known director. What do you guys think? Would you like to seem an almost unknown direct Episode VII or do you want a well established director?
