Now This Is a Gorgeous Harry Potter Tattoo

harry potter tattoo

I’ve seen a handful of Harry Potter tattoos around, but this one done by KC Lange may be the most artful one yet. It has a beautiful design and features not just the Golden Snitch and the Deathly Hallows symbol but also Hedwig, the Goblet of Fire, and the key from the end of the first book. And of course, it features the heartbreaking line from Snape. The shading is lovely, and the design is gorgeous. A bajillion points to the tattoo artist’s House.

Extended Preview for ‘The Walking Dead’ Will Get Your Undead Juices Flowing

walkingdead234

The October 13th premiere on AMC of the fourth season of Robert Kirkman‘s The Walking Dead is fast approaching. Until now we’ve only gotten a look at some production stills and some very short clips. That is, until today. Now we’ve got an extended look at what’s in store for our ragged band of survivors as they try to stay alive in the prison.

Take a look at the video below then join us on the other side to discuss.

Wow, I don’t know about you, but that just re-energized my zombie apocalypse batteries. With so many zombie this and zombie that out there even this NerdBastard Zombie Aficionado was getting a little tired, everywhere I turned it was some new zombie in love or zombie video game, or I was a Teenage Zombie type thing banging on my door for attention. It was just about enough.

The third season had its high points with Merle’s story, as well as its low points . . . Andrea’s whole waffling on the Governor thing and her ultimate demise. I won’t mention the Governor escaping, only because I hope to see an even more gruesome end for him sometime in the future.

This fourth season looks like it will get back to some of the core concepts from the comic. The comic is about the people and how they survive the zombies, as well as their fellow survivors.

What do you think, is Rick back from Coco-For-Cocoapuffs-Land? What are you most looking forward to seeing this season?

The Walking Dead hits the television airwaves on October 13th at 9pm Eastern on AMC, starring Andrew Lincoln, Steven Yeun, Norman Reedus, Chandler Riggs, Lauren Cohan, Scott Wilson, Melissa McBride, Chad Coleman, Sonequa Martin-Green, Emily Kinney, Larry Gilliard Jr., David Morrissey and Danai Gurira.

FauxboCop Remake Gets an Uninspired Poster

Robocop-Remake

So we got the trailer for the RoboCop remake last week, and if it taught us anything it’s that the original Paul Verhoeven movie was so perfect that the only way they could remake it in any kind of original way was to do all the things the original movie didn’t, like involve Alex Murphy’s wife, and make Murphy self-aware about being RoboCop, and saving one of Murphy’s arms…

It looks like the one thing they kept though was the catchphrase, “Your move.” Of course, since this is the remake, they dropped the “creep” because that would be too obvious that this is a remake. But hey, RoboCop is black now so these are clearly inspired thinkers behind the film.

By the way, here’s the new poster for RoboCop 2.0-why bother courtesy of The Film Stage,

Robocop-poster

Plot Synopsis – In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Overseas, their drones have been used by the military for years – and it’s meant billions for OmniCorp’s bottom line. Now OmniCorp wants to bring their controversial technology to the home front, and they see a golden opportunity to do it. When Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) – a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit – is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer. OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and even more billions for their shareholders, but they never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine pursuing justice.

RoboCop starrring Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, Jennifer Ehle, Jay Baruchel, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, and Samuel L. Jackson opens February 7, 2014.

‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ Trailer to Premiere at ‘Thor: The Dark World’ Screenings

captain-america-winter-soldier-comic-con-poster

The countdown to Thor: The Dark World is slowly clicking down and the powers that be at Marvel and Disney‘s promotion and marketing departments are beginning to stir from their deep, dark pits into the glaring sunlit internet. It’s not like I needed another reason to go see Thor: The Dark World, I’m already on the Asgardian bandwagon, but now I’ll get the added treat of seeing the first trailer for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Although, most likely I’ll have already seen the teaser and full trailer on the internet. Thor: The Dark World opens internationally before the November 7th USA opening, and we all know some enterprising YouTuber will get their hands on some grainy, shaky phone footage.

You can’t beat seeing it on the big screen though, that’s often the time when people who might not have been planning to see the movie, or even knew it existed, make up their mind about seeing it or not.

Here’s a synopsis if your just now finding out about the sequel:

After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy – the Winter Soldier. Starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Georges St-Pierre, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp and Maximiliano Hern ndez with Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Redford, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is directed by the team of Anthony & Joe Russo from a screenplay written by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely and is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1941. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing the film. Executive producers on the project include Alan Fine, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo and Stan Lee. The creative production team on the film includes director of photography Trent Opaloch, production designer Peter Wenham, editors Jeffrey Ford, A.C.E. and Mary Jo Markey, A.C.E. and three time Oscar -nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is set for release on April 4, 2014.

First Image of Michael Jai White as Bronze Tiger From CW’s ‘Arrow’

double-size-bronze-tiger

CW is certainly bringing the heat to the second season of Arrow with the series opening the flood gates for lots of new villains and superheros. The latest tidbit of news is this picture of Michael Jai White as the Bronze Tiger. Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim had this to say about White’s Bronze Tiger:

He is such a badass. His performance, our kick-ass stunt department, our incredibly talented costumer designer, and our very gifted props master…they’ve all combined their A-games to create a really great representation of this DC Comics character.

Bronze Tiger makes his debut in this season’s second episode, where we find Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) drawn into battle with Suicide Squad member Bronze Tiger (AKA Ben Turner).

He’s basically the best of the best, so he has come to Starling City to see if the Hood can give him a challenge. To that end, he has aligned himself with China White (Kelly Hu) and the Chinese Triad.

If you’re a fan of the character from the comics, you are going to really happy with his Arrow-fication.

You can expect that everyone will be kung-fu fighting this season, testing Oliver to his limits and beyond. That’s probably why he’ll take on new allies to help. We’ve already seen some clips hinting that Oliver wants to change his nickname from the Hood to something else. I expect the reason and the choice of Green Arrow will be one of the highlights of the second season.

What are you most excited about seeing this second season?

Arrow‘s second season premieres on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 8/7c on The CW.

‘The Walking Dead’ Adds Another New Face for Season 4

RositaEspinosa

With the premiere of The Walking Dead’s hotly anticipated Season 4 only about a month away I’ll admit I’m surprised we’re hearing this casting news so late in the game. The Hollywood Reporter ran the news today that Christian Serratos – whom they plug as Twlight‘s Christian Serratos, though we won’t hold that against her – has been cast in the recurring role of Rosita Espinosa, a character comic book fans should already be familiar with. She’s appearing this season, probably later on given the late notice and likely for only a handful of episodes, but she has the option to be promoted to a series regular come Season 5.

Comic book fans will know not only Rosita, but her traveling companions Abraham and Eugene, though there’s been no news of those roles having been cast of even considered for the show. Yet somehow, I’m sure we won’t meet Rosita alone, unless the show is going to drastically veer away from the comic which is-actually very likely, so maybe that is the case.

I’ll say I’m quite happy to see another woman being added to the cast, considering who we lost last season. Plus, diversity! Got to love that. And if I recall, Rosita’s pretty tough, too, which is good ’cause they’ll need all the help they can get if they plan to either hold the prison or abandon it.

What are you Bastards thinking about this latest casting development? And did you hear the news of AMC’s Walking Dead spinoff series?

New Red Band Trailer for ‘Machete Kills’ Has Plenty of Guns and Ham

Machete-Kills

It’s more fun and dismemberment with Mexico’s most-feared ex-Federale, Machete in Machete Kills, the follow-up to the grindhouse-esque tribute film by Robert Rodriguez, which is in theaters on October 11. To get you warmed up for the film, a new red band trailer has just been posted to the internet, and IGN is bringing it you, via us.

So what wonders does it contain? Well, there’s some prime slices of ham courtesy of Charlie Sheen and Mel Gibson for one, at least two kills by chopper blade, as well as some, uh, high-caliber gun work courtesy of Sofia Vergara.

But why take my word for it, roll the trailer below to take a look:

Machete Kills, starring Danny Trejo and veritable ton of the hottest women in Hollywood, is out on October 11th.

Can You Get An Xbox One On Launch Day? Quite Possibly!

xboxonebanner

One of the claims Microsoft has made is that on day one, there will be Xbox One stock on the shelves. So, to put that assertion to the test, I hit a few big-box stores and a few GameStops in my major metropolitan area… and got both confirmation and some useful advice.

It’ll Be There…

One consistent theme? Microsoft is apparently on the ball with shipping, at least with the five store managers I spoke with. They all had stock they were waiting to put on the shelves, and they were all confident they’d be getting stock throughout the holidays. One store manager who asked I not share his name summed it up by saying “Shortages are probably gonna happen, but they’re trying to avoid it as much as they can. It’s not like last time, where I got my preorders and one or two 360s to put on the shelf. I’ve got some real stock.”

…But Not For Long

That said, stock is apparently going to sell out fast. All five store managers told me they’d had to tell people they couldn’t set up tents to wait thanks to local law, and that they essentially expected a repeat of the PS4, wherein they were sold out within twenty minutes of opening. Jean, one of the managers I spoke to, said “That’s going to keep happening. I expected a big to-do with the PS4 last weekend and then to become just a steady seller, but I get stock in and I’m ordering more by noon. The Xbox One will shake out the same.”

If You Want One, Go On A Weekday

The universal opinion was that if you want a decent chance of buying a new console, PS4 or Xbox One, then you’d need to come into work late; stock for the PS4 sold out slightly less quickly on weekdays than weekends and they expect the Xbox One to follow the same patterns. They also noted you’re less likely to get stuck behind somebody who doesn’t know anything about games.

Try To Get It Before Black Friday

Finally, I asked all five as a joke whether they’d seen anybody get beaten up over a console. Depressingly, none of them thought I was joking. The universal consensus is that they don’t have to start calling the cops on people until after Thanksgiving, so that might be worth considering.

Also, old ladies can really beat the hell out of you and get away with it. Also something worth knowing!

Ben Affleck And Matt Damon Bringing This Ed Brubaker Title To Warner Brothers

Ben Affleck And Matt Damon Bringing Ed Brubaker's 'Sleeper' To Warner Brothers

DC Comics’ Vertigo Imprint story Sleeper has been in film development since shortly after it debuted in 2003. At one point, Sam Raimi and Josh Donen were producing it, and Tom Cruise’s name was attached. Now it’s back in development at Warner, with Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Jennifer Todd producing.

No directors or actors are lined up yet, but Warner has hired The Shield creator and showrunner Shawn Ryan as well as David Wiener (The Killing) to adapt Ed Brubaker’s comic for the screen.

Sleeper – set in noir universe where a few people are spontaneously developing superpowers – follows Holden Carver, a man who can absorb pain and pass it on to others, as he infiltrates a criminal organization on behalf of a law enforcement agency. His allegiances come into question, especially when he falls for the alluring killer, Miss Misery. [Variety]

At first I thought the headline said Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were remaking Sleepers, and I thought, “Kevin Bacon’s gotta stop molesting these kids!”

On Animax Carnival and Typhoon Yolanda: An Open Letter to Local Cosplayers and Anime Fans

Dear selfish and self-absorbed local cosplayers and anime fans,

Yes, I just called you selfish and self-absorbed – because you are. Just because a highly anticipated local event was cancelled almost last-minute (out of respect for the tragedy our nation has suffered and is still suffering from), it does not give you the right to vent on social media about the “unfairness” of it all.

On Animax Carnival and Typhoon Yolanda: An Open Letter to Local Cosplayers and Anime Fans

Yes, you have spent sleepless nights slaving away on your costumes. And yes, this is probably the only chance you have of seeing MAY’N live if you can’t fly overseas to catch her in Singapore or Japan. But those “life-changing tragedies” are small, tiny, FUCKING MINISCULE compared to the suffering that our fellow countrymen are going through in storm-torn Visayas.

Animax (through their mother company Sony) is giving JPY 15,000,000 or roughly PhP 7,500,000 in cash donations, and much more in rescue and recovery equipment. They are doing it out of human compassion and social responsibility. But the money has to come from somewhere – and part of that will come from postponed events, lower spending on advertising, and other cutbacks.

Do you still think they are being unfair for cancelling the event? Didn’t think so.

I know that the event organizers could have taken a different direction – like turn the event into a fundraiser or charity auction, but in the end it is their decision (and their mother company’s) to hold or NOT hold Animax Carnival 2013. However we, as fans and event participants, should learn to act with maturity and respect that decision. Whining like babies on social media is the exact opposite of that.

So suck it up and STFU. If you really want to go to the Carnival, there is always next year.

No love, me.

P.S. Instead of heading for the con on 8th December, why not volunteer at a Red Cross chapter or a DSWD office instead?

‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Rises Out Of Suck Status

I admit it – I am a Marvel fan boy. Among the comics I read the most as a kid were “Avengers” and the amazing Jim Steranko-drawn psychedelic “Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.” I am also a big fan of Joss Whedon, although I admit I didn’t get bitten by the Buffy bug until season three, and used to fall asleep during some of the slower “Firefly” episodes.

So I was very excited when the new “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” was announced after the huge success of “Marvel’s The Avengers,” with Joss Whedon as the show runner. I had visions of Jayne Cobb in Splinter Cell-like gear, or Faith in a black leather S.H.I.E.L.D. “uniform.” And of course, like everyone else, I wanted superheroes (Jessica Drew, please dear God) and super villains (MODOK and A.I.M.; Strucker and Hydra).

What we got was a show that was somewhere between “Man from U.N.C.L.E.” and “Warehouse 13 – without the real international intrigue of the former or the humor of the latter. The show quickly fell into the “baddie of the week” formula, and if I wanted to watch super-science gone awry with real drama and well-done moments of humor, I would re-watch the much better late Fox series “Fringe.”

My friends have almost completely abandoned the show, and they are not alone. According to AdWeek, the show has lost a whopping 53 percent of its viewers since the premier episode, in only seven episodes. The show reached a low point with episode five, in which a Hong Kong man with flame-manipulating powers (and no explanation of who he got them initially, since Disney/ABC/Marvel studios legally can’t use the term “mutant” as long as Fox holds the licensed rights to X-Men) gets abused by the shadowy researchers first seen using chitauri technology in the pilot episode.

This should have been an episode in which the nature of how the show deals with super-powered beings gets set, and in which more clues about the shadowy group of scientists are revealed, Instead we get a guy who is given the horrible name “Scorch” by the bad guys, who despite having a pretty comfy life decides to go all psycho killer on everyone (yes, I know, the chitauri tech helps them get that way, but the transition was almost like flipping a switch). And we find out almost nothing more about the scientists, except that the only one we have seen in more than one episode – SPOILER ALERT – gets killed off.

But the next episode starts to turn things around. It turns out there is no bad guy in this episode, just a mystery that needs to be solved and ultimately a tragedy that is beyond the abilities of the S.H.I.E.L.D. team to stop. Eventually – SPOILER ALERT – the source of the tragedy, a chitauri helmet endangers the life of the lovely and nerdy Agent Simmons. That leads to a great bit of character development, and sets up some actions which – in perfect Joss Whedon fashion – has consequences in the next episode.

That episode, No. 7, is hands down the best in the series so far, and the most Whedonesque. It introduces Saffron Burrows as the perfect incarnation of Victoria Hand from the comics. It makes the massive bureaucracy of S.H.I.E.L.D. seem like an impersonal monster in true Whedon fashion, then turns that on its head. It continues the Fitzsimmons character development, this time making Fitz the subject and revealing depths to his character as an agent. It also advances the concept that even Coulson knows at some level he isn’t the man he once was – maybe not a man at all.

Is it the episode “Ariel” from “Firefly” when it comes to twists and character development? No, but what in modern television on a major old-school network has been?

What episode 6 and particularly episode 7 were turns out to be satisfying shows that leave you wanting to experience more – something that can’t be said of S.H.I.E.L.D. since the first episode. Will it be enough to reverse the precipitous slide in the show’s ratings? Maybe, since Disney owns ABC and Marvel, and is likely willing to let the show simmer until the recipe comes together properly.

At least we can now start to smell that it could ultimately be as good as the recipe promised.

DMZ: A Journey into our Society’s Heart of Darkness

There are two sides to every story. Two versions. Two factions in every Civil War.

Except when there’s not.

That’s the beauty of DMZ‘s first collection of the DC-Vertigo comic series by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli: there are two armies with so many people caught in between, each with their own story to tell. Matty Roth, an aspiring photo journalist, ends up trapped alongside of them, trying to understand their plight and the depths that the two warring nations, the United States of America and the separatist Free States.

In this volume Matty travels inside of civilizations that have cropped up in the DMZ located on Manhattan. It’s a little bit Apocalypse Now, a little bit Planet of the Apes, but all too real. And his journey into this heart of darkness leads him further and further away from the simple black-and-white truths that he thought he knew before he boarded the helicopter in the opening scenes.

The issues came out nearly at the same time as Marvel’s big crossover event Civil War, but nothing in those 100 issues comes close to the originality and timeliness of DMZ. The ideas draw on the best war literature and expand on what Tim O’Brien and Ambrose Bierce and Joseph Conrad wrote in a medium that could tell the story with immediacy. The illustrations are almost sketches of people against a solid background – temporary lives against a temporary city. They are walking the ruins at the end of the world.

The one qualm about this collection, as presented here, is that the story feels episodic and unconnected by the end. There is a journalistic quality to how Matty appears to not judge the people he meets, but I hope that the overall narrative builds the story into a solid direction instead of doing a tour of horror, which in some ways is my biggest complaint about Apocalypse Now, too. But it’s my first encounter with Brian Wood’s work and it’s tantalizing enough to keep reading this or branch into his other comics work.

In short: DMZ’s fiercely frightening. It’s exciting. It just might be brilliant enough to resonate decades into the future when readers want to understand the polarization and anxieties of our time.
