Stunning Beauty: ‘Crysis 3′ In Four Points

Crysis 3 often feels, even at the start, like the ending of a game, where you’re superpowerful and have all the toys to play with.

And that’s a lot of fun, of course. Everyone enjoys the ending moments of a game. But can that sustain a longer playthrough?

Story Is For Wimps, Apparently

It’s pretty hard to care about the unsubtly named Prophet, or his equally unsubtly named buddy Psycho, or really anything that goes on the game. It’s all kind of ridiculous and pulpy, but at least it’s good-natured and doesn’t waste too much time trying to convince us it’s art. This is a game where I skewer aliens with an arrow, I don’t really need a complex plot. Although in a way, it’s too bad: The game has the themes and ideas to support something genuinely thoughtful, but it’s too busy glorying in superheroics to notice.

Look, But Don’t Touch

Far Cry 3 has a complicated, vast open world. Dishonored has levels where you can climb on almost anything you see, teleporting past your enemies to your target.

Crysis 3 has skyboxes. Like, really great ones.

It’s a stunning game, even on console, but the beauty of it just serves to draw more attention to what you can’t do. You see a place and think “Wow, that’s gorgeous, I can’t wait to explore it”… and you never get to go there. While what you do get to play is enjoyable, it’s hard not to feel a bit of longing, especially as you explore a beautifully rendered ruined New York.

You Can’t Choose The Road But You Can Choose How You Travel Down It

Early on, Crysis 3 makes it clear you can play the game the way you feel like playing it. Want to sneak through? Go for it. Kill everything? That’s cool. Mix and match? Whatever works.

That said, the game is essentially a series of big rooms connected by corridors. You choose a spot, pick off enemies, collect ammo and data, rest to refill your meters, and continue. It’s fun, and often quite a lot of fun at that, but it’s not breaking any new ground gameplay-wise.

Not helping is the fact that this game gives you so much up front that it’s often easy, even on higher difficulties.

So When Do They Get The Nanosuits?

During my playthrough, I was shocked by the advantages I started out with. My nanosuit can tag enemies from a thousand yards away? My energy levels and health recover that quickly? I don’t have to earn any of this? Surely the game would take these advantages away, or give my enemies similar ability. But it never really does.

Most games start you off relatively weak and you earn your way to shredding through groups of them like toilet paper. Here there are upgrade points and the like, but you start out overpowered and just get more hulking and superhuman. The difficult curve here is flat.

The bow, newly added to the game, is a good example of the game’s balance issues: It’s silent, it’s got a long range, you can fire it while cloaked, and you can collect arrows from your targets for pretty much infinite reuse. It’s even got trick arrows to play with. It’ll be your go-to weapon throughout the game unless it forces you not to use it.

Not helping is how incredibly dumb your opponents are. The old trick of skewering one foe, then waiting for his buddies to find him and picking them off, will serve you well here.

Better With Friends

The game’s multiplayer is probably the strongest suit, especially Hunter mode, which is particularly exhilarating when you actually win as a Cell operative. The single-player campaign is solid fun, but brief, taking me eight hours only because I spent far too much time trying to pin enemies to walls. But overall, it feels a bit shallow.

Crysis 3 is essentially a one-night stand with somebody dumb and hot: A lot of fun while it lasts, but you’re not going to look them up again. Still, if you’re yearning for a shooter, this should fit the bill quite nicely until BioShock Infinite comes along.

Crysis 3 is available on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3

Hell Is Motivational Posters: A Review Of ‘Antichamber’

One of the ongoing themes of indie games is the fact that there are clever, even brilliant, indie game designers who seem to be pretty far up their own asses as human beings. So, is the designer of Antichamber, Alexander Bruce, one of those?

His game, that several of you requested we review, could go either way. One thing’s for sure: You haven’t played a puzzle game quite like this. A few minor spoilers are under the jump.

Antichamber is kind of the love child of Portal, Echochrome, and “exploration games” like Cosmic Osmo. It’s gorgeously designed with an austere design scheme and mixture of stark whites and bright colors, with a sketchy line. The game also uses sound design to incredibly clever effect; often the sound cues will tell you where you are in the maze.

Even better is the gameplay. Antichamber is immensely satisfying to explore and solve, and some important, and intelligent, design decisions were made along the way. The game takes place in a maze that offers a series of puzzles, ranging from the fairly simple to the utterly mind-bending. At any time, you can click Esc and you’ll be back at the central black chamber, looking at a map that you’ve laid out that will transport you straight to puzzles you haven’t solved yet, and showing you how the puzzles you have solved are connected. It also resets certain aspects of puzzles. This means you’re never stuck and can work on different parts of the game at your leisure, instead of going nuts, and often to solve puzzles you’ll have to return to them.

There’s also a useful trail of breadcrumbs, little tiles you can click on with images that will appear on your tracking wall, showing you your progress and allowing you to read the tiles in order. And here’s where the problem starts. These little tiles tend to be of a cutesy “motivational” image. When you click on them, you get a clue, phrased like a Successory. The fact that this abstract puzzle game was first called “The Journey Of Life” tells you a lot about what you’re in for.

They’re useful guides, but they’re often written to be simultaneously shallow and a wee bit condescending in how obvious they are. Worse, this is the closest the game gets to a story, and it also clashes absurdly, in both art and tone, with the game’s overall design. The overall effect is not unlike Franz Kafka and MC Escher getting together to design an art museum, and then discovering at the very end the art in question is kitten posters about hangin’ on in there.

Similarly, the puzzle design is built around two things that will annoy you at some point: Bruce is very, very fond of perspective tricks, and also very fond of using accepted tropes and basic assumptions against the player. These can make for some superb puzzles, but it also gives the game a tone of snottiness. This is a game that will flat out lie to you, and then punish you for taking what it says at face value by kicking you back to a different portion of the maze. Thankfully, as we mention, this mostly means hitting Esc and picking a new puzzle.

The gameplay itself, the part that genuinely matters, is a hell of a lot of fun, and puzzle game fans are going to spend hours on it. So, enjoy the game, but ignore the motivational posters. Until Bruce has something profound to say, only the gameplay is worth paying attention to.

Antichamber is Windows Only, and available on Steam for $20

‘Halo 4′: The Review

Halo 4‘s single player is painfully brief. I got the game in the mail yesterday, and knocked through the single player campaign in a night, much to my own surprise.

But it was worth it. Although I’ve had zero investment in the franchise emotionally, in terms of storytelling and gameplay, I found this to possibly be the most engaging game of the series. There may not be a lot there, but what is there is polished to an absolutely exquisite sheen.

It may not seem like there’s much to do with Halo; it’s essentially a pulpy ’70s SF paperback that you shoot your way through instead of read. But, as a game, 343 Industries makes their intent clear right off the bat; the pacing of the game is very different. Ammo is scarcer, enemies are more aggressive and more intelligent without “breaking character”, so to speak. 343 doesn’t set out to reinvent the wheel here, but they do make it clear they’re not Bungie in the opening act, forcing you to use more strategy and think harder about where you go and what you do.

The writing is also easily some of the best in the series. The game is never going to win any awards for its story, and it doesn’t deserve any, but the writing doesn’t make the mistake of assuming you’ve played every Halo game and care deeply about the mythology. It’s easy for players to get caught up on what happened without feeling trapped in a loop of interminable cutscenes. It’s stock parts, and it always has been, but they at least put the parts together with care, even if it is a wee bit too self-serious for its own good. Come on, guys, this isn’t a serious military drama. It’s a bug hunt.

Needless to say, the graphics are stunning: this game, which along with Forza Horizon is likely the Xbox 360′s swan song, wrings every last pixel it can get, and it shows. Similarly, Neil Davidge’s score must have taken years: It’s gorgeous and often well considered.

If I have a nitpick, it’s that the weapons, even the alien ones, often stick too closely to the pistol/shotgun/SMG/assault rifle/missile launcher format. The series rarely gets goofy with its weapons, but you do kind of wonder why aliens don’t have weapons that are more, well, alien. Similarly, the design of the new antagonists is a bit stale, although really, you just shoot them. They are well balanced, well, aside from the Needler, and they all at least feel a bit different to use.

My major complaint is the length. I know it’s a modern shooter and expecting even low double-digits is asking too much of a game where single-player is not the reason most people are buying the game, but come on. Six hours? Really? That said the game does seem to be adding co-op missions at least, which should add to the length.

Most people are buying this game for the multiplayer, and dipping into it, it’s well-designed. Really, it’s kind of hard to screw this up, and 343 doesn’t seem to have monkeyed with anything too much.

The hardcore have already paid their $60, and if you like multiplayer, it’s worth joining them. But perhaps in the future, 343 could consider a longer single-player campaign. For the first time, a Halo game has actually left me wanting more.
