Despite the fact that BlackBerry is a dead company walking, they’re very smart to capitalize on the nerdlove we all have for Neil Gaiman. His “Keep Moving” project was also one of the most beautiful things I saw happen on Twitter last week.

Fleischer Says ‘Spy Hunter’ Will Be American ‘James Bond’

Well that’s a bold statement from Zombieland and Gangster Squad director Ruben Fleischer, recently minted director of the constantly in-development movie version of the video game Spy Hunter. Directors ranging in talent from John Woo to Paul W.S. Anderson have all had their turn, but Fleischer seems confident that he knows what to do to get this thing to the screen. Let’s go the quote from Coming Soon:

We’ll see what happens. If I can make any movie, it would be a James Bond movie. I’ve always loved the genre but I don’t think they’ll hire an American to direct a James Bond movie, I’ve been told, so for me, ‘Spy Hunter’ is an opportunity to create a new spy franchise. It sounds silly but that was my favorite video game when I was a kid and it had a great title and a great theme song, but there’s no real other associations that people have with it other than a cool car, so I feel like there’s a lot of room for us to invent a new character and a new series. I think just the Spy Hunter that is the most bad-ass spy who hunts down rogue spies is a really cool launch pad for an idea and I hope that we can bring it to life.

He’s right about Americans not being hired to direct James Bond movies, which is one of the reasons why Steven Spielberg always called Indiana Jones his “James Bond.” But as for a straight up American James Bond, I think they tried that already and called it xXx starring Vin Diesel, and it sucked. Maybe Fleischer will have better luck though, we’ll keep you posted.
